To structure a short movie

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Although i am currently busy writing my feature (the austrian comedy if you remember) i delayed the development a little bit and started working an another project, a short movie.

My last short, Greener Pastures, premiered a year ago and i really really need to make another movie right now.

When i started to structure my ideas i more and more realized that i won´t be able to apply my structure methods for features on short movies, it just does not fit 100 percent. The article i wrote about my approach to structure a story can be found here, but as said at some points it just doesn´t fit when developing a story for a short movie.

Our nifty little group

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Some days ago i started a search for aspiring screenwriters to join my screenwriting group, now, just a few days later we´ve got it together.

We are a group of 6 and i´m really looking forward to the first meeting. Since i´m on a shooting in Croatia the next week it will take us some few days more, but that shouldn´t be a problem.

I´ve already got some really good ideas for topics we could address, we´ll talk about the details on our first “inofficial” meeting, having a coffee or such.

I´ll keep you updated what exactly we are going to do in our group, and over the time i will gather more informations which topic we will address.

Screenwriting Group

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Some time ago i stumbled upon a great eBook about Screenwriting Groups (you can find my post here), it´s from Alexis Niki.

Since then i thought about joining a group, but since Austria is quite a developing nation when it comes to screenwriting i found none. So the only choice left for me was to create one.

So here we go! Since i live in Vienna and i´m writing in german this might only be interesting for screenwriters near Vienna. The whole idea is summarized here: Writers Group Vienna (in german).

John August on Bittorent

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Writer / director John August published his thoughts about illegal downloads of his movie The Nines in a blog post here and here.

People are going to watch the pirated version, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Sony, Interpol and the MPAA will do their best, but as the guy who made the movie, I honestly want people to see the movie. If the only way you’re going to watch The Nines is illegally, so be it.

I really admire and respect his perspective, as a filmmaker you want people to watch your movie, and if they wouldn´t watch it in cinema or on DVD, it´s better they watch an illegal copy than not watching it.

I strongly encourage people to buy the DVD to honor the work of him, i will definitely, but since the mills in Europe grind a little bit slower i have to wait until march (the DVD is realeased at the end of Jan. in the USA, and i want to save the shipping…).

A new approach to storytelling – Story2Oh!

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

The canadian screenwriter Jill Golick started a very innovative concept of storytelling: Story2Oh!. The way she wants to tell the story is not just a new style of movie, theater play or novel, it involves different social platforms like Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and many more.

The idea behind the concept is character driven storytelling, she created some fictional characters that are represented via the social platforms, all of the for example have a Facebook account, one is twittering, others write blogs. Some time ago i wrote about blogs of fictional people, Natalie, Monks assistant, blogs about her life with Monk.

So now Jill took the idea one step further, you can follow the story through the different platforms, the inciting incident is when one of the protagonists, Ali Barret changes her relationship status on her facebook profile to “single”, and for Simon Beals this change of status has a meaning…

I´m really curious following the story to unfold, the first chapter started last monday: Chapter I.

For sure this way of reading, or better, following a story won´t be appropriate for everyone, but which way is? Some prefer books, some movies, and this is a great thing for a special audience (an new audiences as well).

I wish Jill all the best with this project, it´s a great idea and a fresh approach to storytelling.
