Since i am kind of a structure-freak i always struggled with the right choice of software for screenwriting. Over the time i really tried a lot, from word-plugins to industry standard software, but for some reason i haven´t really been satisfied with any software i tried, till now.
Until i found the right thing for me i really tried almost any alternative, but none could compete with my latest choice, Movie Magic Screenwriter. But why? There are couple of solutions out there, but none of them fits the needs as MMS does.
As i evaluated the different options for me it was really hard to find useful statements or comparisons, so i thought it could be helpful for others who want to find the software that meets their expectations.
It is important to state that some applications i didn´t like so much could be the perfect choice for someone else, so at first i want to make clear what i expect from a screenwriting application and what i don´t need that much.
My requirements
Solid Outlining
This is in my opinion the most important feature, almost every screenwriting software offers good text editing, but when it comes to outlining it really narrowed my choices.
With a solid outline solution i don´t get lost in my screenplay and story development is made a lot easier.
Overall look-and-feel
It may sound a little kinky, but since you spend hours and hours with that software the overall usability and the look-and-feel should be really good. And since i´m used to Mac usability this is another obstacle in the choice of the proper software.
Small nifty features
There are plenty of small features that make the life of a screenwriter a lot easier, for example how to put notes in the script, how to keep an overview of the plot, etc.
These little features are another important factor for my choice.
What i don´t need
Production Tools
Since i´m not a professionall writer that makes a living out of writing screenplays i don´t really need production features for revisions that much right now.
Another thing is that the market in Austria is not that bitchy about such features or the overall format at all. Some of the great Austrian movies are written in Word, so i don´t have to think about that a lot.
Of course it is a nice-to-have for me, but not an important factor for my choice.
Export to scheduling software
Another nice-to-have feature, but not that important for me…
The industry standard
What i gathered during my evaluation is that every screenwriting software fits the requirements of the industry standard for screenplays, so that wouldn´t be an important factor in my choice neither.
So far my requirements, here the result of my evaluation, from place 6 to the winner.
